Weymouth Seamface and Splitface Granite

Weymouth Seamface and Splitface Granite is the reason Plymouth Quarries exists and the reason we are located where we are.  The stone lays in a strip along the Weymouth/Hingham town line and is literally unique in the world. With a rich and storied history, there is evidence that use of this stone goes as far back as 1635 and it has been quarried commercially here since the early 1800s.

The quality and beauty of Weymouth Granite can be summed up by experts from the turn of the century (that’s the 20th century).  Professor W.O. Crosby and Dr. G.F. Loughlin of MIT who performed tests on the stone said, "It may be fairly said that no granite is found more perfectly prepared by nature for architectural uses.” The renowned architectural firm of Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson of Boston said, “We have used great quantities of this material, and shall continue to do so…  We prefer it to any other form of face stone for all ecclesiastical purposes.  In our opinion, it is one of the very best and most beautiful building materials, particularly for churches, now on the market.” In addition, Ralph Cram stated, “The finest building stone in New England.”

We still quarry the same stone and supply it to universities, churches, municipalities and residences from Maine to Hawaii.  The technology has advanced considerably, but the stone and its beauty are ageless.
